Team Survivor Newsletter February 2021

Welcome to February! This is traditionally the month TNT training begins but, as you all know, America’s Most Beautiful Bike Ride has been cancelled and Team in Training isn’t hosting training or events through the end of May. Although this was tough news, Team Survivor is moving forward and will continue to raise critical donations for blood cancer patients. We’ll also continue riding and have made plans for a great event in June! Be sure to join us for Kickoff on February 4th and get all the details for the season. Thanks for signing up with Team Survivor to Cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families.

Team Survivor Kickoff 2021 Step into the Sun

Come join us for the Team Survivor Virtual Kickoff for the 2021 season, scheduled at 5:00 pm this Thursday, February 4th! If you didn’t receive the invite via email, please let me know and I’ll send it to you right away. It’s been a tough year but let’s Step into the Sun. Let’s be happy and optimistic, let’s be yellow and bright. Let’s do some good – let’s raise some money for blood cancer research, treatments and cures and let’s get outside and have some fun on the bikes! During our Kickoff we’ll introduce some new teammates, get updates on LLS and hear about progress in blood cancer research from our own Dr. James DeGregori. We’ll talk about fundraising options for new members, training and the announcement on the location of our fabulous biking event in June! Looking forward to seeing you there!

World Cancer Day Fundraiser

100 Friends in 100 Hours

The most effective team fundraiser we had last year was ‘100 Friends in 100 Hours.’ As we kickoff our season, it’s time to kickoff our fundraising for the year! In honor of World Cancer Day on Thursday, we’ll start our fundraiser on Thursday and go through the weekend with the goal of getting 100 donations in 100 hours! Last year, with just part of the team participating, we raised over $10,000! So, on Thursday, February 4th, I would ask everyone on the team to share the image on the left along with a message asking for donations on World Cancer Day. You can start a Facebook fundraiser or just share your fundraising link!

In honor of World Cancer Day, Team Survivor begins our 2021 campaign to raise $100,000 for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. LLS is a global leader in the fight against cancer. By funding pioneering cancer research to advance treatments and cures and helping patients and families access the care they need, LLS is helping to save and improve the lives of patients and giving hope to countless families across the globe. With your support, we’re working tirelessly to change blood cancer treatment and care. My fundraising link is attached if you would like to donate.

Why I Ride – Lori Solomon

Prior to 2016, I was nervous to ride on roads and certainly couldn’t imagine attempting a century, especially one with this big hill I kept hearing about called Spooner.  A friend encouraged me to give it a try and slowly my fears were overcome by the incredible support of Team in Training.  I have conquered that initial fear, met amazing people and supported an incredible cause.  I went from being fearful and nervous to becoming a Team Captain. I enjoyed helping new riders grow and overcome their fears, watching their excitement at the accomplishment of the hills, the miles completed and reaching our team fundraising goal of $100,000 each year.
Unfortunately, I too have lost a family member to a blood related cancer.  I ride in memory of my cousin JoAnn Rothbardt Petersen.  JoAnn was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma at the age of 32 and sadly lost her battle at the age of 43.
If some of our loved one’s had been diagnosed today they would still be with us.  Research made possible from our fundraising is helping to make these changes!  I ride to fundraise and help find a cure!
